Say goodbye to the old way of thinking where
you must run out daily and slaughter everything that moves to get
you experience. Broken Swords & Battered Shields introduces a
new way of looking at experience, through the eyes of actually role-playing
your character. You gain experience based on your performance at the
table in how you are present your Midnighter with their accent or
unique personality. You have to write up a background and give them
a personality for a reason so why not play it.
Broken
Swords & Battered Shields uses what is called a “Mote Advancement”
system to help the character grow and become epic. During each game
the Lorekeeper and their players have chips to give out as rewards
for good role-playing when they see it. Then after each gaming session
the Lorekeeper and their players will ponder together how the entire
session went by viewing the Mote Advancement Questions and electing
the best player or players that fit that situation, if nobody did
then the mote is skipped. Motes that were given out during game play
are ignored. There are 3 categories for mote exchange which are Player
only, Lorekeeper only and then group motes (player and Lorekeeper)
given out. These motes can then be traded in for advancement.
Here
are a few sample Advancement Motes:

Moving the Story Along Mote
Sidekick Mote
We are all about creativity, Imagination and role-playing.
We also understand that there are players who will not like this when
they hear about the Mote Advancement System but I say give it a try.
Everyone who has been skeptical has found that it enhances game play
and greats a purpose or goal to reach towards during the game. When
you realize you are getting left behind you never want to sit there
doing nothing, it really does enhance the role-playing experience.
This is what role-playing is all about.
